At Sustain, we are working hard to be as transparent as possible about our supply chain so our customers can make an informed decision about the products they buy.
It's about sustainability. It's about our future.
At Sustain we take environmental responsibility very seriously and we know you do too!
For years yoga mats have typically been made from plastic. Some brands offer PVC free plastic mats as a "eco friendly" options.
While PVC free plastic is better, once in landfill or nature, the mats still take upwards of 1000 years to break down, doing untold amount's of damage to the environment and the animals that live it in. Another issue with plastic is that it's derived from one of three sources - crude oil, natural gas or coal.
At Sustain we make mats from natural materials. This means that our materials are renewable and won't take 1,000's of years to break down. You also won't find any nasty chemicals in our mats.
Using sustainable materials is only half of the story. Product can only be truly sustainable if they are produced in a way that is both environmentally and socially responsible.
Where do we source our cork from and how is it processed?
Our cork is sourced from Portugal.
Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak. It takes 25 years before a cork tree can be harvested and can be harvested every nine years without felling or harming the tree. Cork tree's live for around 200 years and can be harvested up to 16 times in their life, making cork a highly renewable and sustainable material.
Cork is 100% biodegradable, recyclable and renewable.
In fact, cork increases the amount of CO2 it absorbs once it has been harvested. Cork oak forests retain up to 14 million tonnes of CO2. The average vehicle produces 4.6 tonnes of CO2 per Year, meaning cork forests absorb the C02 from over 3 million vehicles.
How and where are our mats made?
Sustain yoga mats are manufactured using cork and natural rubber that are heat sealed together, meaning no glue is needed. Our mats manufactured in a Sedex verified factory in China.
